Prompt 001: Evidence

There were often days when Stratos knew more about his brother’s movements than anyone else alive. Not hard, exactly, when their father wasn’t even in the same province. But even the friends Felix slunk off to see or the lovers he dallied with didn’t know where he went when he left them, his bolt holes or reinventions or who he was at home. Felix was free with his information, of course. Perhaps he didn’t realise just how much Stratos listened.

There was much more he never spoke of: even he had the sense of his clan. Stratos simply put together the signs: the scrolls left lying open, the rumples of his clothing, the ciphers he used, rumours of impromptu assignations in other people’s litters.

And that was what he never openly hinted in turn. He had enough evidence on his little flighty brother to manoeuvre him any way he pleased.
